Maker Faire!
The Maker Faire is almost here! Sponsored by the publishers of Make and Craft magazines, the Maker Faire is a truly unique event. It's a compendium of designers, crafters, engineers and imagineers showing off their inventions and skills during two days of hands-on and demonstrations. Watch the Power Tool races! How about the watching the catapult contest? I'll be demonstrating No-Solder Glass Charm Pendants at my workbench, and I'll probably demonstrate during a scheduled presentation each day. It's going to be a unique and fun experience--don't miss it!

Demo at Heirloom Show
This weekend, I demonstrated creating collage pendants in the Lost Coast Designs booth at the Heirloom Rubber Stamp show. It is my favorite rubber stamp show in the area--lots of great vendors, demos and fun.
Saturday was tremendously busy. People were constantly in line and watching me demo, and I didn't really get much of a break. Sunday was more mellow, with less people and a much more leisurely pace. I usually demo because I like it, not because I make a lot of money (will work for rubber!).
This year, I created these cool little pendants. I took microscope slides from a medical lab and Memory Glass (Ranger Industries) and sandwiched a double-sided collage between the glass. The collage was made with 7Gypsies printed papers, stickers and ephemera, images stamped on cardstock and colored with Twinkling H2O's and images I printed with my color laser printer. I collaged using gel medium and a spatula, let the collage dry a bit, and then framed the collage sandwich with copper foil tape. I then made a bail out of copper wire and used the foil tape to secure the bail onto the pendant. I then strung the pendant on ball chain and waxed cotton cording. Fun!
Lots of people were oohing and ahhhing over the pendants and they loved the bail idea. I know it's NOT polymer clay related, but I believe that everything feeds the creative process. Two days of playing with great images and tools and I'm feeling very satisfied and happy. Now, back to clay...!

Return from CHA
Hey Margaret and the rest of the SBPCG gang.
Margaret (out current VP) set up this little outpost for us guild members. And at a future member meeting, we'll introduce folks how to blog so everyone who wants to will have a chance to 'speak'.
Since I just came back from CHA, I thought I post a little something about it. Some of you might be interested in attending next year's CHA. CHA (Craft and Hobby Association) helds a truly massive show in Anaheim earlier in Jan 2007. Anaheim, yup, where Disneyland is. In fact, CHA was held in the Anaheim Convention Center, right across the street from Disneyland.
But CHA seemed about the same size! It's a very, very large event, taking up the entire convention center. While it's not open to the public, per se, it's not too hard to attend, provided you know someone who is a CHA member. I demo-ed for Van Aken - maker of Kato Polyclay, so I got an exhibitor badge. This was my first time attending CHA.
With CHA access, I got to sign up for classes and enter the massive exhibit hall, which was chock full of over 1200 vendors, their tempting arts & crafts things and lots and lots of people. Attending not only means getting a peak at all kinds of new and popular arts and crafts stuff, it also means taking advantage of great networking opportunities.
While the primary purpose is doing wholesale orders, vendors seem eager to meet artists to show or hand out samples of new products. There are also publishers looking for new talent.
I got to meet and chat with lots of polymer clay friends and celebrities like Donna Kato, Lisa Pavelka, Syndee Holt, and Judy Belcher.
Will I go next year? I'm not sure. On the downside, the trip cost me about $500 total, included airfare, hotel, food, parking, airport shuttles, although that could be significantly reduced if one does something like sharing a hotel room. If you go there to work, like manning a booth for the event or teach a class, things would be different.
But on the upside, meeting folks, networking, taking classes, seeing all the "toys" is suh-weet!

What is the South Bay Polymer Clay Guild? It's an organization dedicated to bringing people together to learn about working with polymer clay, to inspire one another, to share our talents and experiments, to help one another achieve more in our artwork, and so much more.
The Guild sponsors workshops by nationally recognized polymer clay artists such as Donna Kato, Kathleen Dustin, Sarah Shriver, Janet Farris and Christi Friesen as well as excellent classes by local artists and Guild members! We have meetings on the 2nd Friday of every month in San Jose, during which we have both time to chat as well as a formal demonstration or speaker. We also sponsor Clay Days where we come together and clay for the day.
This Blog is for Guild members to share events, pieces of art (and works in progress), musings on their experiences with clay, things they've found interesting locally/on the web/across the world...well, most anything related to clay or art!
